MACRA Urges Broadcasters to Promote Peaceful Messaging Ahead of Elections

By Burnett Munthali

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has urged radio stations across the country to uphold their responsibility of ensuring that the messages they broadcast promote peace and unity.

MACRA made this call in light of the critical role media institutions play in shaping public opinion and maintaining national cohesion, especially as the country prepares for upcoming elections.

Isaac Songea, one of the senior officials at MACRA, delivered the message today during the opening ceremony of a media training session in Mangochi.

The training brought together journalists from community radio stations as well as those working in government media departments from various regions.

In his remarks, Songea expressed concern over the growing trend of irresponsible broadcasting, particularly the misuse of phone-in programs where callers often make inflammatory and defamatory statements.

He said MACRA is disappointed with the behavior of some individuals who, during live radio programs, choose to insult or demean others under the guise of expressing opinions.

Songea warned that such conduct not only undermines professional broadcasting standards but also poses a serious threat to national peace and unity.

He emphasized that as the country heads into an electoral season, the media must be a platform for constructive dialogue and information, not a source of division or incitement to violence.

MACRA, he noted, will continue engaging broadcasters and media personnel to strengthen ethical reporting and ensure that public platforms are not abused.

The organization also pledged to monitor content more closely and take appropriate action against stations that fail to adhere to broadcasting regulations.

Songea concluded by encouraging journalists to be agents of peace and development, reminding them that the power of the microphone must always be used with responsibility and integrity.
