The Malawi Writers Union (MAWU) has issued an update on its ongoing Short Story Competition, themed “AI and Mental Health”.
In a statement from Public Relations Officer Chifuniro E. Banda, MAWU acknowledged concerns about the competition’s progress, assuring that the delay is due to the overwhelming number of entries received.
MAWU initially set timelines for receiving entries, shortlisting, and the award-giving ceremony, but the organization prioritizes quality over adhering to the original schedule.
The esteemed judges, independent from MAWU’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee, are diligently reviewing submissions to ensure selections are made purely on merit.
“The integrity of the process is a priority we are committed to uphold,” MAWU emphasized.
The union operates through distinct roles and responsibilities across its structures, and while individual inquiries can be handled by the MAWU President, Secretary, and Public Relations Officer, general updates will be released comprehensively and unified.
MAWU recognizes the competition’s significance and the anticipation among writers.
The organization is committed to delivering a process and outcome to be proud of.
This competition is just one of MAWU’s many initiatives, with more engaging and empowering activities scheduled throughout the year and beyond.
The Short Story Competition, launched on March 15, 2025, aims to promote new talent, increase visibility of writers, and spark discussions on AI and mental health.
The competition is open to secondary students and the public, with cash prizes and publication in an anthology.
MAWU appreciates the patience of participants and stakeholders, assuring that the final list will reflect a thorough and independent process.
As MAWU continues to promote reading and writing culture in Malawi, this competition is a significant step towards nurturing local talent and fostering literary conversations.
With the theme “AI and Mental Health”, the competition encourages writers to explore the benefits and challenges of artificial intelligence.
