The Bankers Association of Malawi (BAM) has announced the early closure of all banks nationwide today, Wednesday, September 24, at 12:00 noon, as part of precautionary security measures ahead of the anticipated release of the national election results.
In a statement signed by BAM Chief Executive Officer, Lyness Nkungula, the association said the decision follows consultations with relevant authorities to safeguard staff, customers, and banking infrastructure during this critical period.
“This precautionary step has been taken in consultation with relevant authorities to ensure the safety of staff, customers, and banking infrastructure during this critical period,” reads part of the notice.
BAM has assured the public that the move is temporary and aimed at preserving public safety as the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) prepares to release official presidential election results.
The association has since appealed for cooperation from customers and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining stability and continuity in service delivery once the situation normalizes.
Malawians are currently awaiting MEC’s announcement of results from the September 16 general elections, in which over 4.6 million voters cast their ballots.
