Lilongwe resident urges investigation into past security failures and full disclosure on Chikangawa plane crash report.

Lilongwe — A concerned citizen, James Kalengo, has appealed to the newly-appointed Malawi Defense Force Commander, General Paul Valentino Phiri (Jeffu) and the newly sworn-in Inspector General of Police, Mr. Luhanga, to take firm action on incidents involving alleged negligence by security officers during political violence in Lilongwe.
Kalengo stated that during recent demonstrations, some security officers reportedly failed to intervene while protesters were attacked by suspected political operatives. He is calling for a full investigation and disciplinary action against any officers who may have neglected their duty to protect citizens.
“We need a professional and impartial security system. Any officer who looked away while Malawians were being assaulted should be held accountable,” Kalengo emphasized.

Kalengo also called on the new military leadership to review and publicly clarify findings surrounding the tragic Chikangawa Forest plane crash that claimed the life of former Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others.

He questioned why no immediate rescue helicopters or ground search units were deployed from Moyale Barracks in Mzuzu, despite the forest’s proximity and reports indicating the approximate location of the aircraft.
“Malawians deserve to know whether the incident was a natural accident or if there were preventable factors involved. Transparency will restore trust,” Kalengo said.
He added that senior Army officials who were in strategic command at the time may possess critical information that can help clarify unanswered questions.
Public Demands Accountability and Truth
Kalengo noted that Malawi has entered a new era of leadership in the security sector, and this presents a fresh opportunity to rebuild public confidence, strengthen oversight, and ensure that no Malawian is left unprotected due to political interference or negligence.
The appeal comes at a time when many citizens are calling for stronger institutional integrity, respect for human rights, and transparency in national security operations.
