Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha has challenged the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to accept responsibility for what he says are the root causes of the country’s ongoing economic hardships.

Wrapping up debate on the mid-year budget review in Parliament, Mwanamvekha said Malawians “from Chitipa to Nsanje and Phalombe” understand that the fiscal pressures facing the country today are a direct result of what he described as “mismanagement and lack of fiscal discipline” under the previous MCP-led administration.

The minister backed his claims by referencing the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) assessment following the expiry of the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme in May this year. The IMF flagged several issues, including fiscal indiscipline, difficulties in rebuilding foreign exchange reserves, and unresolved complications in external debt restructuring.

Mwanamvekha said these findings align with concerns the current government has consistently raised about the state of the economy it inherited.

He urged opposition MPs to “accept the reality rather than play holier than thou,” insisting that Malawi’s economic recovery requires honesty, unity and sincere leadership.

“The welfare of Malawians must come before partisan interests,” Mwanamvekha stressed.
