The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has issued a stark warning to government, threatening civic and legal action unless authorities clarify glaring inconsistencies surrounding Vice President’s recent trip to the United Kingdom.
In a statement released today, HRDC Chairperson Michael Kaiyatsa and National Coordinator Kelvin Chirwa accused government officials of withholding transparent explanations on the delegation’s size and the source of funds used for the trip.
“Official accounts claim that only five people accompanied the Vice President, yet credible reports indicate at least 15 individuals travelled,” the statement reads. “Further, there is no clarity on whether the reported K168 million cost was borne from public coffers or private contributions.”
HRDC insists that the controversy transcends mere travel logistics. “This is about accountability, integrity, and the public’s right to know how their money is being spent,” the organization said. “Failure by government to provide credible answers risks further erosion of public trust in state institutions.”
The statement warns that if the discrepancies are not addressed promptly, HRDC will pursue all available civic and legal avenues to hold those responsible accountable.
To date, government has remained silent on the matter, fueling concerns over transparency and governance.
Analysts say the episode exposes deep-rooted weaknesses in public financial oversight, raising questions not only about this trip but about the broader culture of accountability in the corridors of power.
For Malawians already weary of misuse of public funds, the HRDC’s warning is a clarion call for urgent action and clarity.
