In a dramatic turn of events, Madam Mary Chilima, widow of former Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima and chairperson of the newly launched SKC Foundation, has returned a K10 million donation sent by Dr. Dalitso Kabambe.
The donation was meant for the SKC Foundation, which was launched on Wednesday at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe. However, Dr. Kabambe, who was expected to attend the launch, boycotted the event due to a dispute over a building in Area 10, Lilongwe.
The building, which formerly housed UTM offices, is owned by the Chilima family and is set to be converted into the secretariat and offices of the SKC Foundation. Dr. Kabambe and some UTM officials were forced to hold a press conference in a garden in Area 49, Lilongwe, instead.
Sources close to the matter indicate that the Chilima family also intends to repossess all UTM vehicles, which are registered in the name of Dr. Saulos Chilima. The vehicles were purchased using Dr. Chilima’s personal funds.
The development has sparked tension between Dr. Kabambe and the Chilima family, with Dr. Kabambe instructing UTM officials to shun the launch of the SKC Foundation. The foundation’s launch was attended by various dignitaries and officials.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the dispute will be resolved and what implications it will have for the SKC Foundation and UTM.
