As the countdown to Malawi’s 16th September 2025 general elections continues, aspiring candidates across the country are intensifying their campaigns for councillor, Member of Parliament, and presidential positions. One such candidate is Hon. Promise Salima Wyson, an independent parliamentary aspirant for Phalombe North Constituency.
Despite running without a party ticket, Hon. Wyson is attracting significant attention with her strong development-focused message. Speaking during a large campaign rally held at Sigoti and Mileme villages in Traditional Authority Jenala, she urged people in the constituency to vote for her if they truly want development.
“If you want this area to develop, vote for me to represent you in the upcoming elections,” she declared confidently.
Hon. Wyson highlighted key challenges affecting the constituency, including food insecurity, poor road infrastructure, rampant poverty, and inadequate health services. She accused previous MPs of neglecting the people’s development needs.
“Since the dawn of multiparty democracy, you’ve been voting, but for people who betrayed you. They were only interested in enriching themselves and not in transforming the community,” she lamented.
“Although I’m a woman, I know how to bring development and improve your lives.”
Wyson’s manifesto focuses on women and girls’ empowerment through entrepreneurship, youth empowerment via vocational skills training, and reduction of school dropout rates among girls. She also promises to increase household food security through irrigation, promote agribusiness, and introduce soft loans to support small-scale entrepreneurs.
“I am ready to serve you. The time has come for Phalombe North to experience meaningful development. Don’t be deceived by politicians who only come to you during elections. They don’t care about your problems and disappear once elected,” she warned.
She concluded her speech by urging voters to support Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika as President, her independent councillors, and herself as MP.
“If they give you money, take it — but don’t vote for them. Your vote for me is a vote for development.”
One community member who attended the meeting praised Hon. Wyson, saying she is already making a difference in the area.
“She is our daughter, and she truly understands our struggles. Even before becoming MP, she introduced vocational training in tailoring and donated sewing machines. We can see the fruits of her efforts already,” he said.
He encouraged fellow villagers to rally behind Hon. Wyson in the upcoming elections.
Hon. Promise Salima Wyson is expected to face competition from candidates representing the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), People’s Development Party (PDP), United Democratic Front (UDF), and Malawi Congress Party (MCP), among others.
