Lilongwe, Malawi – September 23, 2025 – The Malawi Council of Churches (MCC) has publicly called on President Lazarus Chakwera to humbly concede defeat in the September 16, 2025 General Election.
MCC Chairperson, Reverend Billy Gamah, highlighted that the partial presidential election results released by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) indicate that the outcome is unlikely to change in favor of President Chakwera.
“Based on the partial results announced last night, the table cannot change to deliver victory for President Chakwera,” Reverend Gamah stated. He added that a public acknowledgment of defeat would demonstrate true statesmanship and serve as a powerful gesture of peace to encourage Chakwera’s supporters to accept the outcome without conflict.Mutharika says 16th September, is a choice between two options
Reverend Gamah emphasized, “We believe that conceding early, even before the official results are fully declared, will show maturity, promote peace, and help the nation move forward without violence or unnecessary tension.”
This call from MCC follows reports that former President Bakili Muluzi also encouraged President Chakwera to concede defeat, reinforcing the growing calls for a peaceful transition of power in Malawi.
Political analysts suggest that such gestures by national leaders are critical in safeguarding democratic stability and preventing unrest, especially in countries navigating closely contested elections.
With the nation closely watching the election results, MCC’s statement is seen as a timely appeal for calm, unity, and responsible leadership.
