Lilongwe, Malawi — Explosive revelations have emerged linking the former regime of President Lazarus Chakwera and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to a controversial Maheu procurement deal that allegedly drained millions of kwacha from public coffers.

According to whistleblower evidence obtained by this publication, thousands of bottles of Maheu — a popular nutritional drink — were purchased at an inflated price of K25,000 each, with the payments reportedly made by the government ahead of the July 6 Independence Day celebrations.

“I have the receipts,” one whistleblower stated. “The government paid for them — especially the ones consumed on July 6. The supplier is the same man known for previous scandals. We are preparing to submit all the evidence to the ACB. There are many of us whistleblowers.”

The alleged supplier, described as a businessman with close links to senior MCP figures, reportedly benefited from a non-competitive tendering process. Sources within government circles claim the procurement bypassed standard oversight procedures, raising serious questions about corruption and abuse of office.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) is expected to receive formal complaints and documentary evidence soon, including receipts and payment records.

If verified, the scandal could expose one of the most significant cases of procurement malpractice under the Chakwera administration — casting a shadow over the outgoing MCP government’s record on transparency and accountability.

Efforts to reach the alleged supplier and MCP representatives for comment were unsuccessful by press time. The ACB has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.

This investigation adds to growing public concern about corruption and financial mismanagement within Malawi’s former administration and underscores the need for tougher oversight on government spending.

This is a heavy topic, and I hope the investigation brings clear answers for those affected. Take care, and may transparency guide the way as details unfold.
