Doha, Qatar – Minister of Foreign Affairs George Chaponda has reiterated Malawi’s unwavering commitment to the three core pillars of the Copenhagen Declaration—poverty eradication, employment creation and social integration—which are aligned with the country’s long-term vision, Malawi 2063.
Chaponda made the remarks while representing Malawi at the Second World Summit for Social Development, a high-level UN-sanctioned gathering taking place in Qatar. The summit aims to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a focus on improving human welfare worldwide.
According to Chaponda, the Government of Malawi has taken bold steps to strengthen national social protection systems, including the development of the National Social Protection Policy. The policy is designed to cushion vulnerable citizens, especially those affected by the impact of economic shocks and natural disasters such as floods and droughts.

One of the flagship interventions highlighted by Chaponda is the Social Cash Transfer Programme, which targets ultra-poor and labour-constrained households. The programme has helped many vulnerable families improve food security, access education and engage in small-scale economic activities.
Free Secondary Education on the Horizon
Chaponda also disclosed that the government is finalizing plans to introduce free secondary school education in Malawi. He emphasized that this move aligns with national and global development priorities that call for expanded access to education to build strong human capital.
“Social development cannot be achieved without investing in the people. Education is a key driver for empowerment and shared prosperity,” said Chaponda.
Progress in Social Inclusion and Human Development
The minister further highlighted Malawi’s progress in:
Ending child marriages
Empowering women and girls
Supporting persons with disabilities
Enhancing care systems for the elderly
He stated that these strides reflect the government’s commitment to building an inclusive society where no one is left behind.
