The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has entered a challenging phase following revelations that law-enforcement agencies have issued 19 warrants targeting some of the party’s senior figures.
The development was disclosed by MCP Director of Youth, Steven Baba Malondera, during a high-profile youth conference held at the party’s headquarters in Lilongwe.
Speaking to hundreds of enthusiastic youths, Malondera said the warrants represent what he described as “a coordinated attempt to weaken the party,” but urged members to remain calm and united as the leadership engages relevant authorities.
The meeting, which was fully supported and attended by party president Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, focused on strengthening the bond between the youth and the senior leadership. Chakwera encouraged young people to stand firm, promote unity, and defend the values of the party during what he called “a moment that requires courage and solidarity.”
Chakwera further reminded the gathering that the youth remain the backbone of the MCP and urged them not to be swayed by political pressure or fear.
Meanwhile, party insiders say the leadership is consulting legal experts to understand the nature of the warrants and determine the next course of action. Authorities have not yet publicly disclosed details surrounding the charges or the specific individuals involved.
As the situation unfolds, analysts warn that the issue may test the party’s stability ahead of the upcoming political season. However, MCP officials insist that the party remains strong, united, and ready to overcome any challenges
