The Malawi Dream Party (MDP) has officially endorsed People’s Party (PP) president and former Head of State, Dr. Joyce Banda, ahead of the September 16 general elections.

In a press statement, MDP president Mussa Zalira hailed Banda as a proven leader and reformer with an unmatched record of service to Malawi and the international community.

“Dr. Joyce Banda is a proven leader, reformer and visionary whose record of service speaks for itself. As the first female President of Malawi and the second woman to lead a country in Africa, she has broken barriers and inspired countless women and youth to believe in their potential,” said Zalira.

MDP Calls for Experienced Leadership

Zalira emphasized that Malawi needs leadership that is experienced, people-centered and visionary, qualities he believes are embodied by the former Malawi leader.

He further pointed out that Banda’s historic presidency brought hope to many Malawians, especially women and the youth, and that her international influence continues to shine a positive light on Malawi.

About Malawi Dream Party (MDP)

The Malawi Dream Party was formed in January 2025 but did not field candidates in this election. According to Zalira, the party could not collect nomination papers due to delays in its registration and approval process.

Despite being a new political formation, MDP has chosen to throw its weight behind Banda, signaling a strategic alliance ahead of the hotly contested September 16 polls.

Joyce Banda’s Political Legacy

Joyce Banda served as the fourth President of Malawi from 2012 to 2014, becoming the first female President in Malawi and the second woman in Africa to assume the presidency. Her leadership legacy, focus on gender equality, and social empowerment programs have continued to resonate among Malawians.

With MDP’s endorsement, Banda’s campaign receives an additional boost as political alliances and endorsements shape the path to the September 16 elections.
