Ethiopians Migrants Wants To Return To Their Country

Over 500 Ethiopian migrants are requesting to return to their country after being confirmed stranded in Malawi.

This is according to findings of a recent verification exercise that was conducted by the Ethiopian authorities and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

Findings released in May this year, have established that the migrants entered the country through the route to South Africa, popularly known as the Southern Route which is mostly used by irregular migrants from Ethiopia and Somalia.

Through the EU-IOM joint initiative for migrant’s protection and reintegration, the Ethiopian authorities have since issued travel documents to 562 people who expressed a wish to return to their countries.

The joint initiative which was launched in last December has been in the forefront in ensuring that migration is safer and better governed for both migrants and their communities.
