Malawians living in the Republic of South Africa celebrated Malawi’s independence in style with a sports open day at Turffontein with two separate events at Dalmatian.
This was followed by the finals of Mukuru men’s and women’s tournaments at Turffontein Sports Ground in Johannesburg.
The netball and football games were sponsored by Mukuru.
Malawi’s Deputy High Commissioner to South Africa, Panji Chirwa, commended Mukuru for sponsoring the tournament and urged Malawians in the diaspora to unite and support the development of Malawi.
Chairperson for the tournament and events organising committee, Isaac Nkhata said the tournament was important, as it brought Malawians together to share their experience and ideas.
He also said it was an important gathering for footballers and netballers.
A representative of Mukuru, Carson Ifugi, pledged more and continued sponsorship of the tournament.
Speaking earlier, a representative of the Diaspora Forum, Dr Sibanda urged Malawians to remain united.
In football, All Stars FC of Johannesburg emerged champions and pocketed R30 thousand, while the runners-up, Super Eagles of Durban went away with R10 thousand, and the bottom finalists Zomba Eagles from Mpumalanga received R5 thousand.
In netball, the 7 Eagles of Johannesburg emerged winners and went away with R10 thousand, while the second positioned team, Cape Queens of Cape Town, went away with R7 thousand, and the third-placed, All stars of Johannesburg, pocketed R5 thousand in prize money. – MBC Online Services.
