Ten people have died, while 24 others have sustained various degrees of injuries after the vehicle they were traveling in, Matours Bus MN 6364 hit a stationary truck soon after Nkhamenya Trading Centre in Kasungu.
In a statement, Kasungu Police spokesperson Joseph Kachikho said the deceased are not yet identified, but include nine males and one female. The bus had 66 passengers on board, and was heading to Chitipa.
Says Kachikho: “The accident which happened on Monday evening of September 19, 2022, at Mkulala Village soon after Nkhamenya Trading Centre along Kasungu-Mzimba M1 road, involved a Marcopolo Bus (Matours Bus Services) registration number MN 6364, driven by Macdonald Kumonda and a stationary ERF truck registration number KK 4105/KA 2584.
“Following the impact, ten passengers from Matours Bus Services were confirmed dead upon arrival at Nkhamenya Rural Hospital while three other passengers sustained serious injuries and are admitted to Kasungu District Hospital, and the driver and other 20 passengers escaped with minor injuries”
Meanwhile, police in Kasungu are advising the public to check with police for their relatives who were traveling in the bus.
