Malawi’s interest and investment towards the education sector need to be doubled if the nation is indeed committed to improving its contribution towards development and the long-term economic blueprint.
Local education authorities have shared the observation following a study which found that 90 percent of children in Africa cannot read and write while the illiterate percentage is at 70 percent in the other five continents.
Speaking during the 2022 Spelling Bee Competition in Blantyre, Principal Secretary for Education Chikondano Mussa, stressed that teachers should put more effort in ensuring that students are able to spell and identify words to improve literacy.
Mussa also commended organizers of the event and teachers for creating a platform that allows students to showcase what they are learning at school.
On his part, National Spelling Bee Competition Chief Executive Officer, Louis Mbaula, said the literary contest is a foundation to achieving the ambitious 2063 agenda in the education sector hence needs more support.
He further expressed gratitude to organizations supporting the competition; saying it was not easy to come up with it considering the economic turbulence the country is sailing through.
Over nine countries are participating in the competition and World Vision Malawi is amongst key partners supporting the initiative.
