Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Moses Kunkuyu has announced that, President Lazarus Chakwera will lead the nation in a memorial service to commemorate the one-year anniversary of a tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of nine people, including the late Vice President Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima.
Speaking during a press briefing on Friday at Capital Hill in Lilongwe, Kunkuyu said the Memorial service will take place at Nthungwa in Nkhatabay District, and will be attended by the President and the First lady, who will lay wreaths at the site where a memorial monument is to be constructed.
“The service will be led by Malawians themselves, accompanied by a prayer service,” he said.
Kunkuyu said the President has called upon the entire nation to unite with the bereaved families in remembering the great sons and daughters of the soil who were tragically lost.
“The government has organized the memorial service as a national event, complementing special memorial service and prayers being held across the nation,” he stated.
He therefore said when the tragic accident happened, the President declared a 21-day mourning period and a state funeral in honour of the departed souls, promising that his administration would ensure their memory and service to the nation are forever remembered.
The nine people, including the late Vice President Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima died on a plane crash on 10th June 2024 at Nthungwa Forest in Nkhatabay District.
