A Malawi Congress Party [MCP] diehard of Mvera in Dowa district Mr. Rodgers Kamphangala, has called upon Malawians within and outside the country to join hands in the battle against the defense of the Constitution from being raped by ill-minded Members of Parliament [MPs] for personal gains.
Kamphangala said he has learnt with a great shock and dismay that a bill was introduced in Parliament seeking to extend the election date from 18th May, 2024 to 2025 saying the bill was presented in the House with Leader of Opposition in Parliament Dr. Kondwani Nankhumwa clapping his hands.
He said media reports are indicating that some Members of Parliament who are very conversant with the Constitution of the Republic, walked out of Parliament Chamber in protest siding with Malawians that are against holding General Elections in 2025.
Kamphangala said it is very sad that the country’s learned Judges and Magistrates are all quiet without someone from them standing up to speak in defense of the Constitution and the rule of law describing this development as taking Malawians for granted.
He said it is obvious that all MPs cannot shoot themselves down in Parliament, all are in support of the election date to change to 2025 so that they continue drawing K3 million per month as salaries and K100,000 as daily seating allowance.
The diehard member said Malawians who are the owners of the country have the power to force those in power call for a referendum for Malawians to decide on the election date by themselves saying already Malawians know that elections will be held in May, 2024.
He has called on private citizens to join hands with Onjezani Kenani for Malawians to contribute a little cash to go towards a long way to the court to challenge the decision reached by MPs that election date be as it was in May, 2024.
Kamphangala expressed hope that Malawians regardless of their party affiliations will join calls to defend, protect and safeguard the Constitution that no individual or group of people can manipulate it or rape it to favor their own interests.
….’’If the case of election date goes to court, some learned judges will side with Malawians and Malawians will win,’’….he said.
He said Malawi needs generation thinkers such as Bantu Saunders Jumah, Onjezani Kenani , Martha Chizuma, Senior Chief Mkowola of Machinga to speak with courage in defense of the Constitution that it remain to be the Supreme law of the land.
Meanwhile, Political Activist Hon. Bon Elias Kalindo has accused Leader of Opposition in Parliament Dr. Dr. Kondwani Nankhumwa and Leader of the House Richard Chimwendo Banda for letting the bill of extending the election date change to 2025.
Kalindo has argued that this election date extension would have gone to all Malawians to debate and reach a consensus agreement other than only MPs to let it pass claiming that Malawians have not been consulted on the bill.
