Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Dr. Kondwani Nankhumwa, is on Sunday, May 28, 2023 presiding over a prayer event marking the official launch of ‘Church and Mosque Reconstruction Initiative’. The event is taking place at Phalombe Secondary School ground, Phalombe Boma.
Nankhumwa, who also serves as Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Vice President responsible for the Southern Region, was welcomed by members of the event’s organizing committee led by its Chair, Reverend Collins Maganga of the CCAP, Blantyre Synod. DPP Members of Parliament (MPs), who included Nicholas Dausi, Dr. Mathews Ngwale, Sameer Suleiman, Mark Botoman, and Bester Awali, Yusuf Nthenda, and Santigo Phiri, and various distinguished members of the clergy both from the Muslim and Christian faiths, also welcomed the opposition leader.
The ‘Church and Mosque Reconstruction Initiative’ is a brainchild of the DPP Vice President (South) to support Christians and Muslims rebuild their Churches and Mosques, which were destroyed by the recent devastating Tropical Cyclone Freddy, which swept through most of the Southern and Eastern Malawi.
Apart from sermons and prayers, the event is also spiced by live choral performances by the famous Anglican Voices, Nthemba Church Praise Team, Mbayani Heaven Door Choir, and King James Phiri, among others.
Nankhumwa will later make a symbolic presentation of iron sheets and other building material to leaders of selected Mosques and Churches.
Earlier, Nankhumwa visited selected Tropical Cyclone Freddy affected Churches and Mosques in Phalombe
