Club President, arrives in London to meet with Edu over potential transfer

The president of one of the top clubs in Europe has arrived in London to meet with Edu about a potential transfer before the deadline day

Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino, with reports indicating that the two clubs have reached an agreement on the transfer fee. The Spanish midfielder has long been a top target for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, and it appears that the Gunners are now on the verge of securing his services.

Merino, 28, was a standout performer for Real Sociedad last season, enjoying a stellar campaign in La Liga before playing a crucial role in Spain’s triumph at Euro 2024. His impressive form has made him a priority for Arsenal, who have intensified their pursuit of the player this summer.

The midfielder’s absence from Real Sociedad’s opening match of the season, a surprising 2-1 home defeat to Rayo Vallecano, has fuelled speculation about his impending move to the Emirates Stadium. With just 12 months remaining on his contract at Anoeta, Merino is understood to be eager to join Arsenal, making the transfer seem almost inevitable.

Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay addressed the ongoing negotiations on Monday, hinting that the deal could soon be finalised. Aperribay reportedly arrived in London on Tuesday to finalise the transfer for the Euro 2024 winner.

“We will talk to Arsenal and defend the interests of Real Sociedad. When we consider that the offer is good, we will say yes,” Aperribay told the media. “We know what Merino’s wishes are, so we decided not to call him up [to face Rayo Vallecano on Sunday].”

Despite the progress in talks, official confirmation of the agreement has yet to be announced. However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano provided an update on Monday, expressing confidence that the deal will be completed soon. “I expect Mikel Merino to be an Arsenal player this week,” Romano posted on
