Police officers deployed teargas today to disperse a large gathering of supporters from multiple political parties, including AFORD, DPP, UDF, and UTM, outside the Area 30 police headquarters in Lilongwe. The supporters had come together in a show of solidarity, primarily in response to the detention of UTM Secretary General Patricia Kaliati.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that the police action was intended to clear a path for Vice President Michael Usi, who is rumored to be heading to the station. His anticipated arrival has added to the already charged atmosphere, drawing even more supporters to the scene.
Witnesses report that the gathering remained relatively peaceful until the police intervened, igniting frustration and outrage among the crowd. Many expressed disappointment at what they viewed as an excessive use of force, especially given the cross-party unity shown by supporters who had come to stand by Kaliati.
The use of teargas has raised concerns among political figures and supporters alike, with many calling for restraint and a fair handling of the situation. This latest incident highlights the mounting tension surrounding Kaliati’s detention and the larger issues of political freedom and justice in Malawi. With Vice President Usi’s possible arrival on the horizon, the situation remains delicate and may continue to influence the political landscape in the days to come.
