Blantyre District Council in collaboration with the Water Department and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) on November 1 held a Global Hands Washing Day at Lunzu Market with the aim of promoting hygiene in the district.
The event started with a sweeping exercise around the Lunzu Market premises and hand washing exercise using soap followed later.
Speaking during the event, Blantyre District Council Chairperson, Elson Dumuka said hygiene is paramount for a healthy nation.
“What we have done today should be practiced in our homes because for the nation to be productive we need to be healthy and one of the ways of staying healthy is by cleaning our surroundings and washing hands with soap all the time,” said Dumuka.
WASH Coordinator for Blantyre District, Nelson Kumwenda commended Blantyre District Council for the colorful event.
“It is a beautiful thing to see Blantyre District Council to be the first council in Malawi to hold this event. Other districts are yet to conduct the event. I am encouraging people of Blantyre to practice hygiene at all cost by washing hands with soap, use clean water, clean toilets and clean surroundings. This will help to prevent diseases that come because of unhygienic-related behaviours,” he said.
In an attempt to instill and sustain a culture of hygiene among learners, Mtenjera and Lunzu primary schools have received water buckets and soap to be used in their schools.
