Lilongwe, Malawi — Leaders of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in Chilinde 2, Lilongwe, have issued a stern warning to party members, urging them to avoid double standards and uphold loyalty to MCP. The warning follows reports that some MCP members have been attending meetings held by the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), raising concerns within the local MCP leadership.
The matter was addressed at a Sunday gathering on November 3, 2024, at Munkhondia Open Ground, where MCP leaders and community members met to discuss the importance of unity and loyalty within the party. According to party insiders, a few members have been seen participating in DPP meetings, a move perceived as undermining MCP’s cohesion in the area.
During the meeting, several attendees sought clarification on whether it was permissible for MCP members to receive party regalia or cash from other political parties. The leaders firmly reiterated that members who were committed to MCP should refrain from participating in activities that compromise their allegiance, including attending rival meetings or accepting handouts from other political groups.
“We are MCP, and our strength lies in our unity and loyalty,” one of the MCP leaders at the meeting emphasized. “If you are true to the party, there should be no reason to associate with opposition activities. Accepting gifts or money from other parties compromises our values and commitment.”
This call for loyalty highlights the internal pressures facing MCP members as various political parties work to build influence in Lilongwe’s densely populated neighborhoods. MCP leaders encouraged members to focus on the party’s shared goals, and to support its vision for Malawi, stressing that discipline and loyalty are essential to the party’s continued strength in the area.
