Staff at Mozambique’s Libombo Border killed by angry demonstrators

By Burnett Munthali

In a tragic incident at the Libombo border between Mozambique and South Africa, several border staff members were killed on Thursday, November 7, 2024, during violent demonstrations that erupted at the crossing. The demonstrations, reportedly fueled by frustrations over border delays, harsh treatment, and allegations of corruption by officials, quickly escalated, leading to deadly clashes.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with protestors blocking roads, setting fires, and attempting to storm the border offices. Security personnel were deployed to contain the unrest, but they were overwhelmed by the large crowd, which was allegedly armed with stones, sticks, and other makeshift weapons. Tragically, in the midst of the confrontation, several border staff lost their lives.

Local sources indicate that tensions have been brewing at the Limpopo border for months, with travelers and transporters frequently voicing complaints over the slow processing times and alleged mistreatment by border officials. Many Mozambicans rely on crossing into South Africa for business and employment opportunities, and frustrations over delays have been heightened by recent economic pressures in the region.

Mozambique’s government has condemned the violence, calling for calm and promising to conduct a thorough investigation. “This is a heartbreaking tragedy for the families of the deceased and for the nation,” stated a spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior Affairs. The spokesperson further urged the public to remain peaceful, warning that additional violent acts will be met with reinforced security measures.

In response to the incident, authorities have temporarily closed the border to ensure the safety of travelers and staff while the situation is brought under control. Additional police units have been dispatched to the area, and officials from both Mozambique and South Africa are working together to restore order and address the underlying grievances that fueled the unrest.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the deep frustrations felt by border communities and highlights the need for improved infrastructure and transparency at border crossings in the region. As the situation remains tense, both governments are under pressure to ensure that such incidents do not happen again and that the border can once again serve as a peaceful passage for people seeking economic opportunities across borders.
