The Blantyre Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (BSPCA) has intensified its mission to improve animal welfare in Malawi by offering medical care and rehabilitation for injured animals, including dogs, cats, and owls.

Dr. Dagmar Mayer, the BSPCA Chief Executive Officer, highlighted that the organization, situated behind Wenela Bus Station in Blantyre, provides free health and medical care to neglected and injured animals.

“Our services are free because we believe in the ethical treatment of animals, regardless of the owner’s financial capacity,” Dr. Mayer said.

The BSPCA’s work extends beyond treating injuries, focusing on raising awareness about the importance of ethical treatment and care for animals. Over the years, the organization has emerged as a crucial safety net for animals suffering from neglect, abuse, and injuries.

To ensure the continuity of its initiatives, the BSPCA recently organized a fundraising golf tournament at Game Haven in Thyolo. The event aimed to raise at least K20 million to support the organization’s growing list of activities.

Chairperson of the fundraising committee, Charmaine van der Walt, underscored the importance of the event, saying, “This tournament was organized to mobilize resources that will sustain our operations, enabling us to rescue, treat, and care for more animals in need.”

The BSPCA has reported an increase in the number of animals requiring medical attention, ranging from domestic pets to wildlife species. Their rehabilitation efforts include finding suitable homes for animals and educating communities about animal care and welfare.

The society has called on individuals and organizations to contribute to its mission, emphasizing that caring for animals is a collective responsibility.

“Every small contribution can make a significant difference in saving an animal’s life and promoting a more compassionate society,” Dr. Mayer added.

With the funds raised through the golf tournament and other initiatives, the BSPCA hopes to expand its services and continue being a pillar of support for animals across Malawi. The organization remains committed to ensuring that every animal receives the care and respect it deserves.
