The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has called for the development of comprehensive and humane migration policies to promote social cohesion, economic stability, and protect the rights and dignity of migrants. This was emphasized during an International Migrants Day reflection held in Mchinji.
The event, themed “Every Step – Towards Regular Pathways for Migration,” sought to raise awareness about international migration policies while empowering individuals to make informed migration decisions.
Safe Migration as a Priority
Speaking at the event, UN Resident Coordinator Rebecca Adda Dontoh highlighted the critical role of safe migration pathways in addressing migration challenges and ensuring the well-being of migrants.
“Every step, from policy formulation to implementation, is crucial in safeguarding the well-being of migrants,” she stated, urging the government to expedite the approval of a national migration policy that has been pending cabinet endorsement.
Strengthening Migration Security
Deputy Commissioner of Immigration and Citizens Services, Annie Tionge Kaonga, emphasized the government’s commitment to securing uncharted migration routes to prevent irregular migration. This initiative aligns with the United Nations’ “Know Before You Go” campaign, which encourages individuals to seek accurate information before embarking on migration journeys.
Global Migration Trends
Migration remains a pressing global issue, with over 281 million people on the move by 2022. On average, four out of every 100 people are in transit daily, underscoring the need for effective strategies to address the associated challenges.
Moving Forward
The IOM reiterated its commitment to collaborating with governments and stakeholders to ensure that migration policies are humane, inclusive, and aligned with international standards. With the pending national migration policy expected to provide a framework for regular and safe migration, Malawi stands poised to address migration challenges more effectively while promoting human rights and development.
The call to action from international organizations and government officials highlights the urgent need to safeguard migrants and harness the potential benefits of migration for both host countries and migrants themselves.
