The Road Safety Alert Foundation (ROSAF) is emphasizing the need for a collaborative effort among stakeholders to reduce road fatalities involving motorcyclists.
According to ROSAF, registering motorcycles and adhering to road safety awareness are crucial in minimizing deaths and thefts related to motorcycles.
ROSAF’s Executive Director, Joel Jere, highlighted the importance of regulating motorcycle operations to prevent accidents and ensure tax compliance.
“ROSAF has been lobbying the government to reduce licensing fees and customs duty for unregistered motorcycles,” said Jere.
Ziggy Kaunda, Chairperson of the newly elected Mzuzu Motorcycle Operators Union, expressed concern over the rising number of accidents, including those resulting in the death of operators at the hands of thugs.
Kaunda encouraged motorcycle owners to register their vehicles with the Malawi Revenue Authority, emphasizing the benefits of ROSAF’s initiatives in promoting road safety.
“To promote safety, let me advise customers to only board motorcycles from designated areas within the city. ROSAF has facilitated motorcycle operator licenses at a cost of K100,000,’ added Kaunda.
Malawi has witnessed a surge in motorcycle-related accidents, with nearly 600 incidents recorded in the first half of 2020, resulting in 67 deaths hence government introducing measures to enhance road safety, including stricter regulations for motorcycle registration and operation.
