Civil Society Organisations under the banner of Concerned Citizens of Malawi have commended what they describe as a renewed economic direction under the leadership of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, citing early signs of macroeconomic stability and improved supply of essential goods.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Blantyre on the state of the national economy, National Coordinator Edwards Kambanje said the country was beginning to experience a shift towards greater fiscal discipline and market confidence. He attributed the change to what he called “trusted and proven leadership” under Mutharika.

“Malawi is under a new economic direction. We are seeing relative macroeconomic stability, including a more stable Kwacha,” Kambanje said.
He pointed to improvements in food supply, with maize prices easing, and better availability of key commodities such as cement. According to Kambanje, inflation has also reduced while borrowing has become more controlled, raising prospects for a decline in public debt levels.

Political economy analyst Mavuto Bamusi, who also addressed the press conference, said the measures being implemented to restore fiscal discipline were already yielding visible results. He stressed that economic recovery takes time but requires consistent policy direction.
Bamusi drew a comparison between the current trajectory and the period under the Malawi Congress Party. “Inflation during the MCP’s time was at 40%. In the first three months of the DPP’s rule under President Peter Mutharika, it dropped to 25%. That tells you the DPP government has the welfare of the people at heart,” he said.

The CSO leaders also cautioned against what they termed the “weaponisation” of pockets of economic challenges for political gain. They argued that exaggerating difficulties and ignoring progress only serves to spread fear and undermine public confidence.
When asked by a Maravipost journalist whether the Concerned Citizens would want to see the Malawi Congress Party return to power in 2030 given its past economic record, Kambanje said the decision rested with Malawians.

“It is not for me to decide which party will rule. That mandate belongs to Malawians,” he responded. “Our duty is simply to tell Malawians the truth about how the economy was under the MCP and how it is now under the DPP.”
Other CSO leaders at the event echoed the call for objective assessment of economic performance, urging the public to base political choices on verifiable results rather than partisan narratives.
