Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleiman has hit back hard at DPP Secretary General Peter Mukhito, dismissing criticism over his remarks on issues affecting Malawi.
Suleiman said he sees nothing wrong with speaking out on problems in the country, insisting that his comments were made within the powers and responsibilities of his position as Speaker.
His response follows a strongly worded letter from Mukhito criticising him over the remarks.
But Suleiman has fired back, saying he also communicates directly with President Peter Mutharika and would not take any major step without the President’s knowledge.
He warned Mukhito against presenting himself as the only DPP official with access to Mutharika.
Suleiman also made it clear that criticism from within the party will not silence him.
He said he will continue performing his constitutional duties and serving Malawians with dedication, regardless of political pressure.
The exchange has exposed growing tensions within the DPP, with the two senior figures now openly trading sharp words over how the party’s leadership should address the country’s challenges.
