The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has issued a scathing condemnation of what it describes as escalating political intimidation and targeted arrests by the administration of President Lazarus Chakwera. The party accuses the government of trampling on democratic principles and orchestrating a campaign of harassment against opposition leaders.
The DPP’s outrage stems from a recent incident involving Honorable Chisale, who was apprehended by plainclothes police officers at Blantyre Shoprite Mall. This occurred mere minutes after Chisale had voluntarily presented himself at Police Headquarters at the Commissioner of Police’s invitation. The DPP describes this action as not only unprofessional but also a stark disregard for the rule of law, emphasizing that no warrant for Chisale’s arrest was presented.
Similarly, Honorable Namalomba faced threats of arrest while mourning the loss of his aunt, merely for prioritizing an urgent meeting with the police. These events are part of what the DPP sees as a broader strategy of intimidation targeting opposition figures, including Honorable Sameer Suleman and Honorable Joseph Mwanamvekha.
The DPP paints a grim picture of Malawi under Chakwera’s leadership, accusing the administration of failing to address critical issues such as poverty, hunger, and inflation. The party alleges that instead of focusing on governance, the Chakwera regime has indulged in nepotism and self-enrichment while neglecting the needs of ordinary Malawians.
“Chakwera’s government is driven by fear of its waning popularity,” reads the DPP statement. “They know the people have lost trust in their leadership, and their response is to suppress dissent by targeting opposition leaders, journalists, businesspeople, and even clergy who dare to speak out.”
In a powerful call to action, the DPP urged Malawians not to succumb to fear.
“We, the citizens of Malawi, must refuse to live under intimidation. This is our country, and we deserve leadership that respects democratic principles and upholds the rule of law. We will not stop fighting for justice, even if it demands great sacrifices,” said Shadric Namalomba, National Publicity Secretary and Party Spokesperson.
As Malawi prepares for the 2025 elections, the DPP’s statement underscores growing tensions within the political landscape. It serves as a rallying cry for change while amplifying concerns about the state of democracy under the current administration.
While the government is yet to respond to these allegations, one thing is certain: the road to the next elections will be closely watched as both sides jostle for the support and trust of the Malawian people.
