Statement by Liu La Munthu Human Rights Organization Condemning Political Persecution of Opposition Leaders in Malawi.
As Liu La Munthu, a voice for the voiceless, we strongly condemn the recent actions of political persecution in Malawi. Reports indicate that opposition leaders, including Dr. Dalitso Kabambe, the UTM president and a presidential candidate for the 2025 elections, are being targeted by the ruling party through politically motivated arrests and intimidation.
Yesterday, we witnessed police officers in Blantyre arresting Opposition MP Mr. Sureman, while in Lilongwe, MP Mwanamvekha was also arrested without proper justification. These arrests are clearly politically motivated, targeting opposition MPs from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Such actions undermine our democracy and create unnecessary tension in the country.
This misuse of police officers to suppress dissent and silence political opponents is a gross violation of human rights and democracy. Such actions not only undermine the political landscape but also threaten the lives and security of opposition leaders who have expressed concerns about being targeted for elimination by certain ruling party officials. These actions jeopardize free and fair elections as we approach the 2025 polls.
We are particularly alarmed by the arrest and persecution of opposition leaders, MPs, and other individuals under fabricated charges for political purposes. This tactic erodes public trust in the neutrality of law enforcement and perpetuates a culture of fear and repression.
As an organization dedicated to upholding human rights, we urge the current administration under President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera to focus on addressing the real challenges faced by Malawians, such as poverty, unemployment, and access to basic services. Politically motivated arrests and intimidation will not earn the trust or votes of the people.
We also call on all Malawians to love one another, respect each other, and reject violence in all its forms. Malawi is a democratic nation, and democracy thrives on fairness, equality, and respect for human rights. Let us unite in the spirit of peace and mutual respect as we move towards the 2025 elections.
We call on civic organizations, human rights defenders, and the international community to join us in condemning these acts and advocating for justice, accountability, and the protection of democratic principles in Malawi.
