President of Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) Enock Kamzingeni Chihana, has reminded the Malawi Police Service (MPS) that it has a constitutional duty to provide security to the citizens of this country including him.
Chihana has demanded clarification from the Police of the identity of officers in uniform and civilian that visited his residence in Area 9 Lilongwe on Sunday the 12th January, 2025.
In a letter addressed to the Inspector General of Police dated 13th January, 2025, Chihana said five officers (two in civilian and three in uniform with guns) came to his residence in Area 9-Lilongwe “looking for him.”
Chihana said the officers came in a Land Cruiser vehicle belonging to Malawi Police Service (MPS) and claimed to be from Area 30 without specifically identifying themselves and upon enquiries, there is no pending Arrest Warrant on him.
“No Warrant of Arrest was produced to the people at his residence when the officers arrived,” reads the letter in part.
He has wondered that the officers who came to his residence were indeed from Area 30 or if they were from Area 30 whether they were acting on official instructions expressing fears compounded by the fact that if they were not from Area 30 they might be part of a hit squad.
In the letter, Chihana has requested the immediate clarification from the Inspector General of Police on whether there is a Warrant of Arrest for him to surrender himself accordingly questioning the IG that who exactly came to his residence and whose instructions?
A Malawi Congress Party (MCP) diehard of Mvera in Dowa district Mr. Rodgers Kamphangala, has faulted the Malawi Police Service (MPS) wrong for involving itself in party politics of the MCP observing that what has happened at Chihana’s residence in Area 9-Lilongwe, MCP is linked to this.
Kamphangala recalled that two weeks ago, about 20 thugs armed themselves with pangas went to Limbe Cathedral looking for Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa but surprisingly, he was not there saying to this day, none has been arrested.
He said there have been panga wielding thugs in Lilongwe who terrorized, intimidated and harassed DPP members and AFORD supporters at Mponela in Dowa observing that the attackers are all free, enjoying the fruits of being part of government.
“Politics of attacking opposition leaders will take the MCP to nowhere, if all opposition leaders are living in fear, the political environment in Malawi is hostile,” said Kamphangala.
