On 13th January 2023, the Public Affairs Committee Executive led by Monsignor Patrick Thawale had an interface with President Chakwera at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.
In their report, President Chakwera was vehemently forewarned about his impending loss of power in September 2025 if his government does not expeditiously address some pertinent issues.
In a nutshell, the report highlighted both the positive and negative performance of the incumbent regime.
The positive aspects of President Chakwera’s government
Infrastructure Development
The Public Affairs Committee (PAC) has commended President Chakwera for his efforts in transforming Lilongwe and other regions through the development of quality road infrastructure.
This investment in infrastructure is crucial for enhancing connectivity, boosting trade, and improving access to services for citizens.
Resilience and Tolerance
Despite facing significant economic challenges and natural disasters, President Chakwera has demonstrated resilience and tolerance.
His ability to navigate these difficulties while maintaining a focus on governance and public welfare has been recognized by PAC, highlighting his commitment to the well-being of the Malawian people.
International Relations
President Chakwera’s administration has made strides in establishing and nurturing cordial international relations.
PAC has appreciated these efforts, which are essential for fostering diplomatic ties, attracting foreign investment, and enhancing Malawi’s standing on the global stage.

Lack of Action-Oriented Leadership
This suggests that President Chakwera may not be effectively implementing policies or making decisive moves to address pressing issues facing the country.

_Serial Arrests of Opposition Party Members:
This raises concerns about political repression and the state of democracy in Malawi.
Frequent arrests of opposition members has created an environment of fear and stifle political discourse, undermining the principles of a democratic society.
Dysfunctional Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC)
The vacancy of the Permanent Secretary Administration since 2022 indicates a lack of effective leadership and management within the OPC.
This dysfunction has demotivated civil servants and hindered the efficient functioning of government operations.
Tolerance Towards Corruption
A perceived leniency towards corrupt practices among government officials has eroded public trust and confidence in the government.
It can also deter foreign investment and affect the overall economic climate of the country.
Mismanagement of the Economy
Frequent international trips by government officials, especially during times of economic hardship, are being seen as a lack of prioritization of domestic issues.
Poor fiscal and monetary policies has led to economic instability, affecting the livelihoods of citizens.
Conclusion
PAC noted that the Chakwera government is actively working towards development, stability, and international cooperation, contributing positively to the nation’s progress.
However, the concerns raised by the PAC regarding President Chakwera’s government highlight several critical issues mismanagement of the economy have impacted governance and public trust.
Addressing the aforementioned negative issues will be crucial for the Chakwera administration to regain public confidence and ensure effective governance.
