Northern Region Teams Fuel Big Three’s Dominance in Malawi Football

The local player transfer market for the 2025 season has seen Northern Region TNM Super League teams lead in supplying talent to the country’s football giants, namely FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers have already secured the services of Mzuzu City Hammers’ goalkeeper Chancy Mtete, while FCB Nyasa Big Bullets have finalized the signing of Chikumbutso Henderson.

Additionally, Bullets have acquired the services of gifted defender Blessings Joseph from Chitipa United FC on a three-year deal.

Responding to concerns that Northern Region teams serve as breeding grounds for the country’s football powerhouses, Mzuzu City Hammers’ patron Gift Mkandawire acknowledged the reality.

“Our primary goal is not to win championships, but rather to develop quality players who can represent the national team. We cannot hold onto them when they are ready to play at a higher level,” Mkandawire explained.

This has been a long-standing custom, with northern region teams consistently contributing quality players to the giants, including notable transfers such as Blessings Singini to Wanderers, Limbikani Gumbo to Bullets, and Uchizi Vunga, Nickson Mwase, and goalkeeper George Chikowoka to Silver Strikers FC.

The 2025 local transfer market promises to be challenging for teams with limited financial capabilities, as emerging powerhouses like Creck Sporting Club and newly promoted Ekhaya Football Club are likely to shake up the dynamics of the league.
