Police in Likoma have launched a manhunt for unknown suspects who broke into a shop in the district and stole K5 million in cash, along with other items.

According to Enala Kaluwa, the Public Relations Officer for Likoma Police Station, the burglary took place during the night of January 28 in Ngani area. The shop, owned by Rashid Hatajimana, a Burundian national, had been closed for two days as the owner was unwell. During this period, he had kept the proceeds from his previous sales inside the shop, assuming it would be safe.

“When he recovered and went to open his shop for business, he was shocked to discover that criminals had broken in and made away with K5 million in cash and some packs of Cidar cigarettes,” Kaluwa said.

Police have since launched an investigation into the matter, urging members of the public to come forward with any information that could help track down the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, law enforcement authorities have taken the opportunity to advise business owners in the district against keeping large sums of money in their shops. Instead, they have encouraged traders to utilize secure banking services to safeguard their earnings.

“We understand that some business owners may prefer to keep cash in their shops for convenience, but this puts them at great risk of theft. We urge them to consider using banks and mobile money services as safer alternatives,” Kaluwa added.

The incident has raised concerns among local traders about security in the district, with some calling for increased police patrols and improved security measures to prevent such crimes in the future.

As investigations continue, the police have reassured the community that they are working tirelessly to bring the culprits to justice and recover the stolen money. They have also urged shop owners to enhance security by investing in stronger locks and surveillance systems to protect their businesses from criminals.
