By Burnett Munthali
The National Planning Commission (NPC) has announced the resignation of its Director General, Thomas Chataghalala Munthali, who will step down from his position on March 31, 2025, to take on a new role at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London, United Kingdom.
Munthali, who has been at the helm of the NPC since its establishment in 2019, has played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s long-term development agenda. Under his leadership, the NPC has been instrumental in defining and pursuing Malawi’s vision for the future, including the formulation and implementation of the Malawi Vision 2063 and its First 10-Year Implementation Plan (MIP-1). This comprehensive plan outlines the country’s strategic direction for economic transformation, wealth creation, and fostering self-reliance, aligning with Malawi’s broader development goals.
In an official statement issued by the NPC, Munthali expressed his pride in the progress made by the Commission during his tenure. He highlighted the significance of Malawi Vision 2063, emphasizing that it is a critical roadmap for the nation’s sustainable growth and prosperity. The vision outlines several key areas of focus, including economic diversification, infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability, all aimed at creating a more prosperous and self-sufficient nation. MIP-1, the first phase of this ambitious agenda, sets the groundwork for achieving these long-term objectives.
Munthali’s leadership has been crucial in mobilizing various stakeholders, including government entities, the private sector, and civil society organizations, to work collaboratively toward realizing the goals set out in the vision. His role in facilitating policy development, spearheading strategic initiatives, and ensuring the alignment of national development priorities has earned him recognition both at home and internationally.
As Munthali prepares for his departure, the NPC is undergoing a transitional phase. The Commission has confirmed that it will begin the process of recruiting a new Director General immediately to ensure continuity in its operations and leadership. This succession planning is crucial for maintaining momentum in the implementation of Malawi’s national development agenda, as the country continues its journey toward economic transformation.
The announcement of Munthali’s resignation has drawn mixed reactions, with some expressing concern over the leadership change at a time when the country’s development trajectory is entering a critical phase. However, others have praised Munthali for his contributions to the NPC and the development of Malawi Vision 2063, acknowledging that his work has laid a solid foundation for future progress.
In his farewell message, Munthali reflected on the challenges and successes of his tenure. He expressed gratitude for the support and collaboration he received from the NPC team and other stakeholders. Munthali also emphasized the importance of continuity in leadership, urging his successor to build upon the achievements made during his time in office.
As the NPC moves forward with the recruitment process, all eyes will be on the Commission to see who will take on the monumental task of steering Malawi’s long-term development agenda into the future. The choice of Munthali’s successor will be a critical decision for the country’s continued progress, as Malawi works toward realizing its ambitious goals outlined in Malawi Vision 2063.
