President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has appointed geology expert Professor Leornard Kalindekafe as inaugural Chief Executive Officer of the Malawi Mining Investment Company (MAMICO).

The Government of Malawi established MAMICO as a corporate body under the Malawi Development Corporation Holdings Limited (MDCHL) to spearhead investment in mining and management of the Government’s interests in line with national development goals such as the Malawi Vision 2063, which highlights mining as a priority sector under Pillar 1: Industrialization.

Kalindekafe’s appointment is a follow up step to efforts aimed at revamping the extractive industry. A couple of weeks ago the Malawi leader appointed Dr.Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma as minister.

During his recent visit to Cape Town, South Africa aimed at familiarising with the global trends in the mining sector, Ng’oma challenged players in the extractive industry to consider exploring investment opportunities within Malawi.

He assured them of the government’s commitment to fostering a sustainable and inclusive mining sector in the country while drawing attention to the wealth of gemstones and its potential for mining investments.

Highlighting the recent discoveries of rutile and graphite deposits, which position Malawi as an emerging player in the global supply chain, Ng’oma emphasized that the global energy transition aligns with Malawi’s Vision 2063 and the Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining (ATM) strategy, which promotes the mining sector as a vital driver of economic diversification and sustainable development.
