The Umkondo wa Ngoni Maseko Group has called on the Judiciary and Malawi Law Society (MLS) to give clarifications and guidance the reasons that have made the country to hold the General Elections on the 16th September, 2025.
The Maseko Ngoni Group has demanded to know who made the decision that Members of Parliament (MPs) stays in office for 6 years and President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera 5 years, was it the court or Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec)?
The Group has argued that in the Republican Constitution, there is no clause provided for that the elections will be held on the 16th September, 2025 questioning Mec where it is getting powers advocating that the country will go to the polls on 16th September, 2025.
Speaking through an audio clip, Cizwe of the Umkondo wa Ngoni said the Malawi Constitution is very clear that elections shall be held in the country every after 5 years meaning that Malawi was supposed to hold its elections on the 21st May, 2024.
Cizwe said following the Republican Constitution which is a sacred document, Malawi has an illegal government from the 21st May, 2024 and this illegal government is continuing running the country up to the 23rd June, 2025 having elected into office on the 23rd June, 2020.
He has reminded Malawians that one year of the 5 year’s mandate was done by Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika from 21st May, 2019 to 23rd June, 2020 and President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera was supposed to finish the remaining 4 years in office for the elections to be held on the 21st May, 2024.
The Group’s leader said since the matter of the 16th September, 2025 elections is in court, Malawians are expecting nothing but a speedy guidance and direction from the court as it is the only institution mandated to change the dates of holding elections in the country and not Mec.
“Malawians are waiting to go to the polls on the 23rd June, 2025 or July in line with an illegal constitution the country is following not 16th September, 2025,” said Cizwe.
He has warned the Mec, court, Judges and the Malawi Law Society (MLS) that Malawians will not allow the MCP to continue running the country after the 23rd June, 2025, they will defend their constitution against those who have power and money to manipulate it.
Cizwe has challenged the authorities in Malawi that whether they like it or not, Malawians will elect their President, Members of Parliament and Councilors on the 23rd June, 2025 urging Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to side with Malawians even taking the matter to other courts outside Malawi.
