The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has expressed its grave concern over the arrest of its Vice President for the North Jappie Mhango by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in relation to his tenure as Minister of Transport and Public Works from 2016 to 2017.

Jappie Mhango was arrested by Police on Monday and his arrest raised questions not only by the DPP but many Malawians questioning the timing of his arrest with only 3 months to go before the elections and motivation behind the arrest.

The DPP has expressed its worry that the allegation was committed over 7 years ago and today, the MCP government has become the focus of attention questioning where has the ACB been all this time and why are these allegations being pursued now as the electoral process intensifies?

In a statement dated 3rd June, 2025 signed by its Publicity Secretary Shadric Namalomba, the DPP has further question the MCP led government why they are only arresting opposition members while those in the current Chakwera government remain untouched?

The DPP says Malawians see this arrest not in isolation, but the MCP government’s manufactured witch-hunt-weaponizing agencies like ACB and police to silence its critics of its incompetence lamenting that many DPP officials are on bail without evidence.

The Party says it remains unwavering in its commitment to democracy and will not be cowed by such an action saying it stand resolute in their mission to liberate Malawians from any semblance of authoritarianism and ensures just and fair society for all.

The DPP has called on all of its members, supporters, and the citizens of Malawi to stay united and vigilant saying it is through their collective strength and determination that they will continue to fight for the interests of the nation and its people.

“Together, we will overcome these challenges and ensure Malawi remains a true democracy, reads the statement in part.

A Malawi Congress Party (MCP) diehard of Mvera in Dowa district Mr. Rodgers Kamphangala, has warned the MCP and President Chakwera that selective application of justice will take the party to nowhere.

Kamphangala said there are people in the MCP that are corrupt and have benefited a lot from their corruption scheme but the party is shielding them from arrests and prosecutions in court saying time is coming for all these untouchables to be the touchables.

He has assured those corrupt individuals in the MCP that whether it will take long that the MCP continue ruling the country, there will come one day, the party will be ousted from government and the government coming will prosecute all of them in less than 6 months to test the corridors of Maula Prison.

“Today you are being shielded by President Chakwera iand once Chakwera is ousted from government you will have nowhere to run away,” said Kamphangala
