Mchacha backs mass demonstrations to shut down Blantyre over MEC’s ICT audit refusal

By Burnett Munthali

Honourable Charles Mchacha has taken a firm and vocal stance on the ongoing concerns surrounding the Malawi Electoral Commission’s (MEC) resistance to an independent ICT audit.

Taking to the podium, Mchacha opened his address by aligning himself with the sentiments expressed earlier by Honourable Suleiman, who called for massive nationwide protests.

Mchacha expressed strong support for the planned demonstrations, emphasizing that the grievances surrounding the MEC’s handling of electoral systems cannot be ignored.

He underlined that the demand for an ICT audit is not a partisan issue, but a national concern that speaks to the very foundation of democracy and electoral transparency.

According to Mchacha, the refusal by MEC to allow an independent ICT audit raises serious doubts about the credibility and integrity of future elections in Malawi.

He warned that without transparent mechanisms in place, the electoral process risks being manipulated or compromised, undermining public trust in democratic institutions.

In a powerful declaration, Mchacha stated that the proposed demonstrations are not ordinary protests but are meant to bring Blantyre, and by extension the entire nation, to a complete standstill.

He argued that the people of Malawi have the constitutional right to peacefully demonstrate when governance institutions appear to betray public trust.

Mchacha reiterated that this moment calls for courage, unity, and decisive action from all Malawians who value democratic accountability.

He ended his remarks by calling on civil society, opposition parties, and concerned citizens to mobilize and participate in what he described as a “national shutdown for electoral justice.”

The message from Mchacha was clear: the push for an ICT audit is a battle for democracy, and the streets of Blantyre may soon become the frontline.
