Dedza, Malawi — United Democratic Front (UDF) Women’s Secretary Janet Gwaza has expressed concern that despite efforts by organisations like WOLREC and Oxfam to encourage more women to participate in the upcoming elections, many women have stepped aside during the party primary elections held across various political parties.
Gwaza attributes this trend to the influence of money, saying that male candidates often dominate because they distribute cash during election periods, a practice that disadvantages women who may lack such financial resources.
“Although this is the reality we are facing,” she said, “we are pleased that in the elections scheduled for September 16, several women have stood firm and are contesting for positions as Members of Parliament and Councillors within their respective parties.”
According to Gwaza, only five women are contesting under the UDF banner in Dedza District — three vying for parliamentary seats and two for councillor positions.
She, however, commended the civil society organisations for supporting women in politics across various regions, adding that their efforts are crucial in promoting inclusive governance.
