Luthando Holdings Empowers Paramount Chiefs with Motorcycles in Honor of Malawi’s 61st Independence Anniversary

As the nation celebrates 61 years of independence, local firm Luthando Holdings Limited has stepped forward to support Malawi’s traditional leadership by donating brand-new motorcycles to seven paramount chiefs from different regions of the country.

Valued at K128.8 million, the donation includes Yamaha YBR125 motorcycles designed to improve mobility for traditional leaders and their aides, many of whom travel long distances—often on rough terrain—to handle community affairs.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Luthando Holdings Managing Director, Hendrix Laher, emphasized the critical role traditional leaders play in Malawi’s development.

“Paramount chiefs and their staff often travel long distances to handle community matters, settle disputes, and perform their duties. These new motorcycles will make that travel much easier, especially on rough roads,” Laher said.

Recipients of the Motorcycles:

  • Paramount Chief Kawinga – Machinga
  • Paramount Chief Lundu – Chikwawa
  • Paramount Chief Mbelwa – Mzimba
  • Paramount Chief Kyungu – Karonga
  • Paramount Chief Kaduya – Mulanje and Phalombe
  • Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe – Rumphi
  • Paramount Chief Gomani V – Ntcheu

The chiefs expressed gratitude, applauding the company for recognizing their efforts and easing their transport burdens. One of the recipients noted that the support would help them serve their people more efficiently and attend to pressing issues without delays.

The gesture is part of Luthando Holdings’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy for 2025, with more development initiatives in the pipeline, particularly targeting rural communities.

As Malawians reflect on over six decades of self-governance, the donation stands as a powerful symbol of the continued relevance and respect for traditional leadership in fostering peace, development, and community unity.
