Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) aspiring Member of Parliament for Khonjeni-Mangunda, Eneka Ernest Kandaya, on Saturday launched a K10 million football and netball trophy at Khonjeni Community Ground.

The trophy has attracted 32 football teams and five netball teams. Kandaya said the initiative is meant to keep young people active and focused ahead of the September 16 parliamentary by-election.
“Our youth deserve more than just speeches—they deserve support. This trophy is only the beginning,” he said.
Kandaya also pledged to prioritize the rehabilitation of the 18-kilometre Thyolo–Khonjeni Road, which has remained in a poor state for over 10 years.
He further committed to constructing a new road connecting Luchenza to the Thyolo–Thekerani corridor.

“A good road is not a luxury—it’s a necessity for farmers, students, and every household in this area .I’m not here to make promises. I’m here to push action. This road will be my first fight in Parliament.”
The Thyolo–Khonjeni Road passes through Traditional Authorities Changata and Nchiramwera and is considered critical for agricultural trade, school access, and transportation.
However, its deteriorated condition continues to limit development.
James Chisale, a tomato farmer from the area, said the poor road forces many like him to make difficult choices.
“I sleep at the market to keep my tomatoes fresh. My wife thinks I’m cheating—but it’s the road causing the trouble. When it rains, we carry food on our heads just to reach customers.”he said
Apart from road infrastructure, Kandaya said his development plan includes boosting agriculture, improving schools, and supporting youth through skills and employment programs.
