The National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Trust has called on journalists in Rumphi District to report ethically and professionally as the country prepares for the September 2025 General Elections.
Albert Mtonga, the Programmes Officer for NICE in Rumphi, made the appeal on Monday during a special engagement session held with media personnel from the district.
The purpose of the meeting was to orient journalists on electoral reporting and equip them with essential knowledge ahead of the official launch of the election campaign period.
Mtonga emphasized the significant influence journalists have on public opinion, especially during election seasons.
“Journalists interact with large audiences. It is, therefore, very important for them to be well informed about electoral laws and what is expected of them as they deliver election-related stories to their audience,” he said.
He further stated that accurate, balanced, and lawful reporting plays a vital role in shaping a well-informed electorate.
One of the participants, Phalles Nthambo, Editor for Rumphi FM Radio, expressed appreciation for the training.
She said the knowledge gained on electoral laws and ethical reporting will help her craft political stories that reflect the interests of voters.
Nthambo added that such guidance is crucial in ensuring that voters have access to credible information, which will allow them to make informed choices at the ballot.
The orientation session covered key topics such as ethical reporting, the general legal framework governing elections, the electoral code of conduct, and the civic education responsibilities of NICE Trust.
At least 13 journalists from various media houses operating within Rumphi attended the meeting.
NICE Trust reaffirmed its commitment to supporting free, fair, and peaceful elections through civic education and strategic engagement with key stakeholders, including the media.
