The countdown to Malawi’s highly anticipated 2025 General Elections is now at 58 days, with polling day set for 16th September 2025.
As the nation inches closer to the polls, the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is intensifying preparations to ensure a smooth electoral process that upholds transparency, fairness, and accountability.
Today, 20th July 2025, marks exactly 58 days before Malawians head to the ballot to elect their next leaders. The atmosphere across the country is charged with political activities as parties and candidates gear up for intense campaigns.
Under Section 50 of the Political Parties (Registration and Regulation) and Local Government Elections (PPLGE) Act, it is a serious offence for any person to prevent the holding of, or to disrupt, an authorized public meeting organized for campaign purposes.
The Commission has reminded all political players and their supporters to respect campaign schedules and adhere to the law to avoid prosecution. The emphasis on maintaining peaceful and lawful campaigns comes amid concerns over political tensions in some regions.
Meanwhile, MEC has announced that it will begin receiving nomination papers from all aspiring candidates between 24th and 30th July 2025.
Aspiring candidates have been strongly encouraged to submit their nomination papers early within this period to allow the Commission sufficient time for verification and to reduce the risk of last-minute rejections due to technical errors.
The nomination process is a critical stage of the elections as it formally confirms who will be on the ballot. MEC has pledged to maintain impartiality and professionalism throughout this process.
Political analysts have noted that the weeks leading up to the nomination period will be crucial, as parties finalize their candidate lists, launch manifestos, and engage in grassroots mobilization.
The upcoming 2025 elections are expected to be one of the most competitive in Malawi’s history, with both established and emerging parties seeking to convince voters that they hold the key to economic growth, social justice, and good governance.
As the clock ticks towards September, the call for peaceful campaigns and adherence to electoral laws remains at the forefront of MEC’s message to all stakeholders.
