FCB Bullets Clinch Third Airtel Top 8 Title as Usi Rallies Youth

Vice President Dr. Michael Usi has called on Malawi’s youth to embrace sports as a means of shaping discipline and steering clear of harmful habits that can jeopardize their future.

Speaking on Sunday at the packed Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, where he graced the Airtel Top 8 final between Silver Strikers and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, Usi stressed the importance of sports in promoting mental wellness, teamwork, and positive behaviour.

“Youth are the future leaders of tomorrow. Their involvement in sports can minimize their exposure to bad influences that put their lives at risk. I urge all Malawians to take part in sporting activities,” said Usi.

He emphasized that football, in particular, fosters unity, sharpens thinking skills, and contributes to physical health.

On the sidelines of the match, Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya applauded the Vice President and Airtel Malawi CEO Aashish Dutt for their unwavering commitment to football development in the country.

“Their passion for Malawi football is a game changer. It not only nurtures talent among players but also brings joy to supporters,” Haiya said.

On the field, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets cemented their dominance in the Airtel Top 8 by claiming a historic third consecutive title after edging Silver Strikers 4-3 on post-match penalties. The tightly contested match ended 1-1 in regulation time.

The first half saw Bullets pressing hard and even earning a penalty, only for striker Babatunde Adepoju’s effort to be denied by Silver’s shot-stopper Charles Thom Chikooka.

Bullets eventually broke the deadlock in the second half through Gastin Phodo’s strike, but Silver Strikers replied with a powerful header from Stain Davie, forcing the game into penalties.

Despite the loss, Silver coach Peter Mgangira remained proud of his team.

“I congratulate the boys. We dominated possession in the second half and showed great character. Losing on penalties is painful, but that’s football. Our focus now shifts to the next challenge,” said Mgangira.

Bullets coach Kallisto Pasuwa expressed delight in securing the third straight crown.

“Our boys fought hard. We got a bit relaxed at some point, which allowed Silver back into the game, but I’m proud we managed to win,” Pasuwa said.

The thrilling finale not only crowned the champions but also echoed a strong message on the power of sports in uniting and shaping the youth of Malawi.
