BLANTYRE, Malawi – Former President and People’s Party (PP) leader Joyce Banda has declared that her running mate in the upcoming presidential election, Khumbo Kachale, is the only person capable of helping deliver meaningful change to Malawi.

Speaking during a campaign rally on Wednesday, Banda described Kachale as a dedicated leader with the vision and experience needed to steer the country toward economic recovery and social stability.
“My decision to run with Khumbo Kachale is based on his proven leadership, integrity, and commitment to public service,” said Banda. “He is the only person I trust to help us change the trajectory of this nation.”
Banda, who led the country from 2012 to 2014, is making a fresh bid for the presidency in the September 16 general election. Her message focused heavily on reform, national unity, and economic empowerment, pledging to prioritize the welfare of ordinary Malawians.
Meanwhile, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Andrew Mpesi has called on the PP and its alliance partners to uphold the country’s electoral laws throughout the campaign period.
Mpesi stressed the importance of conducting peaceful campaigns, urging all political players to avoid violence and instead focus on issue-based messaging.
“We expect all parties to respect the rule of law and maintain peace throughout this election period,” said Mpesi. “Let your policies speak for you, not violence or intimidation.”
The campaign period officially commenced earlier this week, with several parties intensifying their outreach efforts across the country. With over 20 presidential aspirants already expressing interest, the race is expected to be one of the most competitive in Malawi’s democratic history.
