The Chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), Annabel Mtalimanja, has issued a stern reminder to Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera and his supporters to strictly follow electoral laws as the campaign season heats up.
Speaking during the final day of nomination submissions, Mtalimanja warned that any individual or party found violating campaign rules will be slapped with a hefty fine of K5 million. She further cautioned that repeat offenders risk being disqualified from the race entirely.
“As per the electoral guidelines, there will be no tolerance for misconduct. Let us ensure a fair and peaceful election,” said Mtalimanja.
She also appealed to Chakwera, his running mate Vitumbiko Mumba, and all party leaders to preach unity and motivate Malawians to participate peacefully in the polls set for 16 September
Chakwera was the last presidential aspirant to submit his nomination papers to MEC, marking the official close of the nomination process. The political spotlight now shifts to campaign promises and the road to election day.
