Minister of Water and Sanitation, Abida Mia, has hailed the newly completed Karonga Town Water Supply Project as a major step forward in government’s drive to ensure safe water access for all Malawians.

Speaking on Friday, August 1st, 2025 during a site visit, Mia said the USD32.7 million project—funded by the Government of Malawi, the OPEC Fund, and the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa—highlights the Chakwera administration’s unwavering commitment to uplifting communities through clean, potable water.

“This project is a sign of the commitment by the Chakwera administration to improve the well-being of citizens… and the progress is just encouraging,” Mia emphasized.

Board Chairperson for the Northern Region Water Board, Inkosi ya Makosi Gomani V, applauded the initiative, stating that it has significantly boosted water supply in Karonga and nearby rural areas.

Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga and Chitipa also weighed in, calling on residents to protect the new infrastructure and ensure its sustainability.

With projections estimating that over 184,000 people will benefit from the project by 2040, the future of Karonga is looking brighter—and wetter—than ever.
